I found your post very interesting. I am sure that there is a lot of truth to
your idea and overall I agree. I just want to add a few points.

Harry may be the main character, but it is possible that more people
identify with Hermione because at this point in the books, she is more
mature than Harry ( no howlers please!!!) and we are, after all, 'grown ups'.
It is possible this is true because she is a girl which might be a reflection
on our soceity expecting girls to grow up faster or maybe they just do
naturally. Maybe she really is a year older than Harry and Ron
( I am hoping not to bring up discussion on this again).

Maybe she is more mature because JK Rowling was a girl, and so puts more of
herself into Hermione and thus made her more mature. Perhaps because of
indetfication with Hermione she will want to pair Hermione off with some one,
perhaps not, seeing as JK Rowling seems to be happy being single.

Also Hermione is the only one who seems clued in to the word of romance
(wants to be asked, isn't horrified at the thought of dancing, gets dressed up
etc., adroitly manages more than one offer) so this may be why shippers focus on her.

Personally I am shipper in that I think Hermione will be paired up with one of
Harry or Ron, I just don't know who ( or feel strongly one way or another)
and this is primarily because she is my favourtie character and I want her to be happy
and to get more "screen time" which might not happen if she ended up with some else
or didn't pair up at all.
