Hi, my name is Liz. I'm new to this group and I hope
that I don't make that blatantly obvious as I post :)

<<McGonagall -- Almost a total blank slate. We don't
know what she knows how to do, other than turn into a
cat and transfigure things. She probably doesn't know
how to ward off a dementor based on her failure to
prevent Crouch from losing his soul.>>

I think Prof. McGonagall is going to be a more
behind-the-scenes person of this war rather than one
of the wand-wielding forces. She strikes me as the
kind of person that is going to keep things running
smoothly and as normally as possible at the school
while all of Hell is released upon the wizarding
world.

<<The Weasleys -- Also a blank slate. We don't know
whether they are especially powerful, and the loyalty
of Percy is questionable (sorry Penny!).>>

I agree that Percy's loyalty is in question. My
brother and I have dicussed this into the ground
(along with a few other things that I might end up
getting to later) and we have decided that as Mr.
Crouch's personal assistant, he is an excellent
candidate for the job of head of department despite
his age. While someone with seniority might win out,
it is still a possibility. And whether he chooses
loyalty to his family (who is obviously sided with
Dumbledore), or loyalty to the ministry may be a key
thing in the next book. Other than Ron (or maybe
Arthur, see next para.), I think he is the only
Weasley who might play a key role in any of the next
three books.

Also, does anyone think that Arthur can be an insider
to the ministry for the Order? Assuming that the Order
is what most people think it is?

<<Percy could turn out to be problematic, but I think
it *might* affect Ron more than Harry, directly.>>

Agreed, effecting Ron indirectly effects Harry, IMHO.

<<Interesting, how Ron ended up with another unicorn
hair wands. I wonder if all the Weasleys have unicorn
hair?>>

Another thing that my brother and I read somewhere
(can't remember for the life of me where, my apologies
if its someone's site!) about Unicorn hair wands and
the people they belong to. The centaur told Harry in
PS that the innocent victims were the first to die,
and then they came upon the dead unicorn: an innocent
victim. Cedric's wand was unicorn hair, and he died an
innocent victim, an innocent bystander. Makes me
shiver to think what may now happen to Ron (or Charlie
for that matter). I don't want a Weasley to die, but,
you know, somebody's got to do it.

<<Hermione's birth is provisionally pencilled in as
*1980* - with a guessed birthday of September 10th.>>

While I have never seen an exact *day*, I assume the
year to be correct. And I believe in PoA Hermione
bought Crookshanks with birthday money her parents had
given her, which gives the date of early September.

<<Conclusion: The Magic Gene is found in all humans.>>

This is something I have thought on myself many, many
times. With my limited genetic training (AKA Mr.
Kreiter's Biology class) I have come to a conclusion
(an another possibility). *listees murmur,
disinterested* Yeah, yeah. I have come to the
conclusion that The Magic Gene, as Milz says, is in
all humans, but is a recessive trait, or even perhaps
a mutation of a gene. And so with Purebloods, you have
the certainty, Half-and-Half you have the probability,
and Muggle-borns you have a sliver of a chance. Sound
weird? Probably :)

*getting off my soapbox now*
