Actually, it seems pretty common knowledge in the wizarding world that 
Lucius Malfoy was a former DE. The Weasley boys discuss it at the 
dinner table. However,it is noted that Lucius claimed he was 
enchanted. After GoF, we can guess that his defense was "Imperius".
