Very odd, as US mothers tend not to wear them either.

How common is "hired help" in the UK? Here in the US, a family that was well
enough off might easily have someone in to do the cleaning, and possibly even a
cook. I'm wondering why Petunia evidently does both herself. Is it just an
example of how the Dursleys aren't really nearly as "arrived" as they pretend?
Or is that not especially common in the UK?

Since we know she gets names from places on maps (Snape is one), this would be
unsurprising.
