Hello all. I want to chime in on this topic, if you don't mind.
There is an obvious mutual respect between Snape and Draco, evident
from very early on. Is it simply because Draco is in Slytherin?
Doesn't seem to be, do Crabbe & Goyle and the others get the same
preferential treatment? There isn't direct evidence of that, other
than collateral favoritism because Slytherin, in general, is favored
by Snape.
Is it because Draco is a Malfoy? Perhaps, Snape is obviously visibly
irritated when Harry implicates Lucius in GoF.
Here is what I suspect, both of the reason why Snape is a former DE
and Draco is his star pupil. Look at the prime facet of Slytherin:
ambition. Is it ambitious to follow a powerful leader? Perhaps, I am
in Corporate America and see that all the time (the Leach Effect).
But isn't it even more ambitious to reach the heights of one's
achievement on one's own? To be a leader yourself? I suspect this is
why Snape bolted from the DE. He had no desire to be anyone's slave,
Voldemort's or anyone else's. Who wants to be a Pettigrew? Who wants
to have to instantly run to someone else's side the minute their
tatoos tingle? Look at how he absolutely refused to be in J. Potter's
debt for saving his life? He is an independent man, beholden to no
one, even LV (even though he undoubtedly fears LV).
Draco is also a leader. At this time, a juvenile leader of a bullies
club, to be sure. But what if the DE Youth forms at Hogwarts? Could
he march in jack-booted conformity with other DE Youth, taking orders
from a DE? Not for long would be my guess.
So how's that for a possible plot line: LV starts to recruit
Slytherin students. A DE shows up to rule them with an iron hand.
Draco, having lost his position as Head Thug, goes to Harry: "I'll
help you get rid of this bozo." And voila! Head thug redux!
Draco "redeems" himself, yet is still an ambitious, nasty slug, and
still Harry's arch-enemy!
