Well, but if a break would cause a wand to leak magic, wouldn't Ron's 
wand have been inadvertantly magicking things for a while, seeing as 
prior to being completely broken it was so worn that it's insides 
(unicorn hair) were sticking out of the tip?

I dunno about the car though.  Good observation that it didn't show 
personality before the crash.  Hmm.  Maybe the car was like a very 
patient cat, which puts up with it's people...and puts up with it's 
people...and then one day one of it's people crashes it into a tree 
that freakin' beats the heck out of it and it thinks, you know, you 
people are way too high-maintenance; I'm outta here!

Or something.  Or...not.  :-)
