Well, hmm, all righty.

An aside: quite frankly, one of the reasons I began wondering whether
or not Snape actually wants the job, and what evidence exists to that
extent, is because in reading summaries of fanfic (I haven't read any
fanfic, just a bunch of one-line summaries at a massive HP fanfic
site) I saw several summaries which indicated that the fics
characterized Snape as terribly abused by not getting the job he so
desires; or as having some sort of deep dark secret involved in his
desire for the job, making his not getting it all the more poignant;
and cetera. Which got me thinking, "I wonder why he hasn't gotten the
job...and, hang on, come to think of it, I haven't seen anything in
the books to indicate that his desire of the job is any more than
student gossip.  Wassup wi' that?"

I do want to hear (well, er, read) theories as to why he hasn't been
given the job, but I'm also interested in possibly some concrete
explication, especially if based on text, as to evidence that he
actually wants it. Not that the simple postulation that it's a fun
idea isn't absolutely valid (:-P) but I am hoping there might be some
substantiation profferred...?
