Really? And why wouldn't he exaggerate? If you recall, he also told Harry 
that Hagrid raised werewolf cubs beneath his bed. Rowling later said in a 
chat that Riddle was just exaggerating, slandering Hagrid.

Riddle strikes me as the type that will play any psychological game he can to 
get what he wants. He was trying to make Harry empathize with him
