I can't help noting (since I just made a sermon about it on my own Oz
Group), that in this sense the Oz books are closer to Tolkien than
JKR. In Oz, not only does no one grow in character, no one is
"allowed" to! Write a new Oz book that focuses on character development,
and the authoritarians in the Oz community condemn you for meddling
with "the beloved status quo". I know from experience. So I'm
grateful for Harry Potter! (If only on account that Hermione is NOT
condemned to remain forever "a little girl witch after all".) :)
