We have seen the name before.  In PS/SS, someone named Nott is Sorted 
just before Pansy Parkinson and the Patil twins.  We aren't told what 
house they're sorted into, or even what the person's sex is.  Given 
that they don't appear in any of the double classes, either with 
Slytherin or with Hufflepuff, my personal guess is that s/he was 
sorted into Ravenclaw.  However, we don't ever learn the names of all 
the Slytherins or Hufflepuffs in Harry's year, so we really just 
don't know what house s/he went to.  (I _think_ if Nott the Student 
was one of the famous Two Missing Gryffindor Girls, we'd've gotten 
more of a reaction from Harry when he meets Nott the DE in GoF, so 
s/he must be in one of the three other houses.)

Presumably Nott the DE is the parent of Nott the Student.  That's 
pretty much all we know.  (I'm sure someone will jump in and correct 
me if I'm missing a reference to either Nott in one of the other 
books.)
