In Hagrid's defense, didn't he start to become a better teacher at the end of GOF? (After the Skeeter article about his giant-ness was published and Dumbledore and the trio gave him a pep talk.) 

It was then that he brought out the unicorn fawns (which he knew loads about) and the marvelous nifflers. I think everyone in his class started to enjoy it after that.
