To follow up Penny's post, during his brief tenure as a member of this list, Richard Abanes, who wrote a book about Harry Potter and how unChristian the books are, said that JKR had admitted in an interview that about 1/3 of the magic in the books was real.
I found the interview he was citing to, and in it, she said that 1/3 of the creatures and things, including the philosopher's stone, Grim and House Elves, came from real (meaning already-existing) mythologies and folklore.
Context is everything.
