Just throwing in my two Knuts, after the pretty definitive answers 
from the interviews:

Speaking as a Wiccan, the spells used in the book not only aren't 
real spells, they're not even close.  (Not that we don't sometimes 
wish it were that easy! ;) )

I concur with the previous poster who suspects your friend saw the 
Onion article.  Dangerous thing, humor, when used around the 
humor-impaired.
