I have a simpler solution still. If I were JKR's editor at the
moment she discovered this problem <begins hyperventilating at the
thrill of the very thought> <puts head in paper bag> <ah, that's
better> I would pat her hand and say, "Calm down, honey. Just ditch
the Map. Harry didn't bring it along to his bath at all, problem
solved. Feeling better? Here, have a cuppa."
The only apparent plot purpose for having Harry look at the Map that
evening, besides him seeing "Crouch" in Snape's office, is to get it
into Moody [or whoever]'s hands. If that were still essential to
the plot, she could easily have written in the carrying and dropping
of the Map without ever having Harry actually look at it or see the
name of whoever's in Snape's office. Again, problem erased.

I agree with you, but that doesn't mean JKR does. Remember, she named
her hero Harry because she thinks it's the nicest boy's name known to
Englishdom, and it would be about #495 on my list of names to give a
son. No offense, JKR and Heidi! <g> De gustibus and variety is the
spice and all that good stuff.
