I've been reading the discussion this list has been having about J
Rowling's 'class list' which she showed during the BBC interview on
Thursday night and I was so interested - and obsessive - that I've
been doing a bit of researching myself. I've even created a small
database on my computer with the information she's given. I've got a
few theories, I hope no-one minds me jumping in here, it's just been
a lot of fun thinking about this. I'm probably wrong...I just
thought I'd share.

First, JK did state before she showed the list that they show 'names,
houses and magical prowess' (I was going to write the actual quote,
but i can't get into the Leaky Cauldron's transcript of the
interview, so, sorry, you'll have to confirm that point yourself *g*)
I'm going to take that at face value and assume that the symbols on
the second row (which I've imaginatively called N Square, Star and
Circled Star) refer to that.

N SQUARE:

Granger Hermoine	N Square	G
Abbott Hannah N Square	H
Finch-Fletchley	Justin	N Square	H
Boot Trevor N Square	R
Entwhistle Kevin	N Square	R

N Square= Natural Talent

There are at least two *known* mudblood's in this group, Hermoine and
Justin. I think N stands for 'Natural', as in natural talent. I'd
expect this to be found in mudblood's more than purebloods, because
they'd have to be pretty powerful to be taken in at Hogwarts as
opposed to a muggle school, wouldn't they? Dumbeldore wouldn't take
any old muggle, the talent would have to be there already. So
there'd naturally (hah, bad joke) be a higher proportion of natural
mudbloods than purebloods with talent. I expect that purebloods and
halfbloods are on this list as well, just not as many.

As a side note, I think the N is only in a square to differentiate
from the letters in the third column (house R H G S)

STAR:

Bones Susan Star	H
Corner Michael Star	H
GoldsteinAnthony Star	H
Hopkins	Wayne Star	H
Jones Megan Star	H
Brocklehurst Mandy Star	R
Le Su Star	R
Bulstrode Millicent Star	S

Star= Least talent.

None of the Gryffindor's are here, it seems mainly to contain
Hufflepuffs. Now, no offence, to Huffles, but they are often
referred to as the house with the least talent (take Draco's insult
of them in PS/SS for instance) and the Sorting Hat talks about them
as being "just and loyal", which, although nice qualities, aren't
representative of magical talent, like I think the others are.
Hufflepuff never get much to boast about (note their reaction to
Harry becoming a Champion against Cedric). My basic point here is
that I think of all four houses, Hufflepuff are the least talented
when it comes to magic, which makes it unsurprising that mainly
Hufflepuffs have Stars against their name.

CIRCLED STAR:

Brown Lavender Circle Star	G
Finnigan Seamus Circle Star	G
Cornfoot Stephen Circle Star	R
MacDougal Isobel Circle Star	R
Crabbe Vincent Circle Star	S
Goyle Gregory Circle Star	S
Greengrass Queenie Circle Star	S

Circled Star= Average.

There are no Hufflepuff's here, yet it's fairly representative of all
the other houses (2-3 students for each), and I can't imagine what
else Slytherins (such as Vincent and Gregory) have in common with the
other two houses (with the likes of Seamus or Lavender).

I have no idea what that large upside down star means next to the
remaining pupil that was shown (can't remember her name). Maybe she
was going to be a natural talent but was changed to least talent, and
JK just drew the star too boldly?

What do you think of my theory, anyway?

Adia
X(my first post!)

PS: I really doubt there are ANY halfbloods in Slytherin, let alone
mudbloods, considering that it's Salazar's house, and he was against
anything that wasn't pureblood. Just a thought.
