You're right, it'd be kinda odd for him to hear her talking like that
and then hang out with her, but she's pretty forceful and he's used
to being led around by his gran.

That's true. I guess he's known about it all his life, and I doubt
that tough-as-nails Gran of his soft-sells the issue, so he can
probably deal with it. He may not have a hard time talking about it,
he may just have learned that other people do, and he's certainly not
one to force any topic of conversation himself.
