What he says: "I *wish* I knew who it *is*," said Malfoy petulantly. "I
could help them."
I am afraid he does want to be of use, but hardly in a good way.
On the other hand, I think his remark "I hope it's Granger." (who will
be killed by the Heir) has to be taken with a grain of salt. He's
probably sick and tired of his Dad throwing Hermione's accomplishments
in his face (I would have thought you'd be ashamed that a girl of no
wizard family beat you in every exam), and has, from a twelve year
old's point of view, a perfectly understandable reason for wishing the
monster at her, doncha think?
