I'm over a hundred posts behind, so this may already be completely 
resolved, but I couldn't help tossing out something really silly that 
may help explain this.
Remember the Bill and Ted movies?  They are the best example I can 
think of for a super-simple example of this.  At one point the two are 
locked in a cell at the police station (I think) and one of them asks 
the other to remind him to go back in time and put the key inside the 
cell, or something to that effect.  As soon as he says this, they find 
the key, so then at some point after that they had to go back and 
actually put the key there.  Does that make any sense?  So Harry was 
saved by the future him, who had gone back in time and was standing on 
the other side of the lake, but the future him didn't realize that 
that's what had happened until the last moment, whereas Bill and Ted 
did it on purpose.
