I'm over a hundred posts behind, so this may already be completely
resolved, but I couldn't help tossing out something really silly that
may help explain this.
Remember the Bill and Ted movies? They are the best example I can
think of for a super-simple example of this. At one point the two are
locked in a cell at the police station (I think) and one of them asks
the other to remind him to go back in time and put the key inside the
cell, or something to that effect. As soon as he says this, they find
the key, so then at some point after that they had to go back and
actually put the key there. Does that make any sense? So Harry was
saved by the future him, who had gone back in time and was standing on
the other side of the lake, but the future him didn't realize that
that's what had happened until the last moment, whereas Bill and Ted
did it on purpose.
