How about an old-fashioned, wind-it-up-every-day watch?  Those are 
purely mechanical, no batteries or anything.  Nowadays they're hard to 
find (in the US anyway) but they used to be the cheap way to go.  And 
they'd probably conk underwater, especially if they claimed to be 
waterproof...
