Boils, actually - not burns.  A boil is (according to my mother's trusted copy of the
1967 Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English) a "hard (usu red, often
painful) poisoned swelling under the skin, which bursts when ripe."  Quite an irony, when
you think about it:  the remedy for acne, when applied in concetrated form, will actually
result in the evil big brother of acne.
