Somone mentioned that lake extended to Hogsmeade.. well, another thing to
think about.. Harry travels to Hogsmeades through the secret passageway..
so it really can't be too far.  Maybe it's a mile.. but that would still
make the lake too large to walk around.  I tend to suscribe to the idea
that they walked along the lake near the castle.  

Of course the lake could be bewitched and only seems small when you look at
it.. and who knows what else! <g>
