Good question.  I've been wondering the same thing.  He's obviously not
an ordinary cat.  He seems to know what Peter-ur-scabbers was from the
start and Sirius was able to communicate with him.  Any theories, guys?
(or girls, if you're politically correct and don't likt that general
usage)
