How did Harry survive Voldemort's attack as a baby?

I'm a bit of a novice at this, and I haven't had time to look at all 
the threads in his question, but my simplistic reading was that Lilly 
was prepared to sacrifice her self for Harry and this was an "old 
magic" that Voldermort could not overcome. In terms, a mothers 
selfless love saved Harry
