I don't think it needs to be that complicated (that is, to assume
that Snape knew the nicknames but not the people behind them).
I think he knew who the Maurauders were, that they made the map and
he was letting Lupin know that he knew. But he also was making sure
that if Harry didn't know where the map came from that nothing he
(Snape) said would inform him. He can't say "Isn't this the map you
and your friends came up with, Lupin?" because that would reveal too
much history in front of Harry.
He probably figures (correctly) that if Harry finds out his father
had anything to do with the map, then it would take on huge
importance to him. If Harry can be made to think its dark magic,
then he might not kick up a fuss if its confiscated.
Any doubts that Snape himself had about the map's origin would have
vanished when the insults appeared on it.
