To be precise, it has 12 hands and "little planets moving around the
edge." The planets aren't necessarily on the hands; in fact, the
implication is that they aren't.
Per the original point, though, I don't doubt that Dumbledore had some
sort of alarm--via his watch or something else--that let him know when
James and Lily were attacked. His watch does *not* seem to tell him
where Hagrid is, just what time it is.

How about this: hats are for formal occasions and cold weather?
Maybe in wizard as in much of western Muggle culture, one takes one's
hat off indoors. Feasts and such would be exceptions.
BTW, on another thread, I do feel some sympathy for Pettigrew in PA
19, and it has nothing to do with why he might have become a
traitor, what else he ought to have done, or whether there's any
excuse for what he did. It's purely that however scummy, he is a man
begging for his life. He doesn't want to die and I feel for him.
