a whole bunch of interesting stuff about English public school attire.

While I mostly agree with peoples explanations of why and how the
various pieces of Hogwarts attire are worn, one thing I am pretty
sure of is that there is a DIFFERENCE between the movie and the
books, in terms of what they wear. In the books, the students always
seem to wear their robes, whereas in the movie there is one scene
(Harry and Oliver Wood outside with the snitch) where they are not
wearing them. However, since attire is not mentioned in every scene
in the book, I suppose it is possible that sometimes they take their
robes off. Maybe it was hot out that day.

There is at least one classroom scene in one of the books where
someone (Seamus Finnegan?) sets fire to something and Harry has to
put out the fire with his hat. This implies that students generally
wear their hats to class, whereas in the movie the students rarely
seem to wear their nice, witchy-pointy hats.

Also, in the movie students wear ties and have Hogwarts crests on
their robes, neither of which were mentioned in the books. If ties
were required, wouldn´t you think it would have said that in Harry's
letter? I don´t think that kids in the early 90s in England
ordinarily wore ties.

The movie seems to have gone for a much more "typical British
boarding school" look, rather than the "traditional folklore witches
attire" look implied in the books. Maybe the moviemakers thought
that they would look too freaky in their witches outfits, and kids
watching the movie wouldn´t be able to relate to them.

someone wearing a tie
