One thing that was missed from GoF - and I think a 'brick' by JKR -
is that AFAIKS there is no discussion at the beginning of GoF on the
Quidditch team composition and most specifically on who is to be
Gryffindor captain. Wood after all famously had his last year at
Hogwarts in PoA. Right up to the moment when the Triwizard tournament
is announced in the First Feast, Harry and his Quidditch mad
comtemporaries would surely have had lots to say about who was to be
the next captain and who was to be the Gryffindor goalkeeper.
The possibilities would have been right at the top of their minds
especially during and after the World Cup... and potential conflicts
here too.
Harry must have wondered if he was in line for the captaincy.
Anyone know what position Ron favours in Quidditch?
If he is a passable goalkeeper maybe he would be in line for the
team. If Harry was captain he would have a strong voice in team
selection. Conflict possibilities and one way of putting a plot wedge
between Ron and Harry?
A wedge for example if Harry did become captain and had two
candidates for goalkeeper, one of them Ron, but neither so strongly
superior in play as to make selection automatic then who does he
pick? If the good of the team suggests not Ron....
One way for Harry to find out the loneliness of power? And how having
power can crack friendships?
Anyway, unrealistically, the anticipation of all this is simply not
covered in GoF (Ok it was long enough but ...) so the whole thing
must come into book 5 surely???
Edis
(by 'brick' I mean a plot development opportunity that if either (if
used) leads to future unintended complications or an opportunity
missed at the time which leads to unintended complications later to
rectify the ommission).
