In CoS, Professor Binns says: " A rift began to grow between Slytherin
and the others. Slytherin wished to be more selective about the students
admitted to Hogwarts. He believed that magical learning should be kept
within all-magic families. He disliked taking students of Muggle
parentage, believing them to be untrustworthy. After a while, there was
a serious argument on the subject between Slytherin and Gryffindor, and
Slytherin left the school."

So, on the one hand, the Hat says nothing about purity of blood and
there would surely be Muggle-born students who fit the Slytherin
personality profile, but on the other hand, the Hat is supposed to
choose the students that the Founder of each House would have chosen if
heesh were still around, and WOULD ol' Salazar have chosen Muggle-born
students into his House, when the other Founders could have thrown it in
his face, like "How can you say that Muggle-born folk shouldn't be
taught magic when you grabbed that Muggle-born student for your House?"

I don't think so. As far as I can tell, a Mudblood is Muggle-born on
both sides. In CoS, Ron explains: "Mudblood's a really foul name for
someone who is
Muggle-born - you know, non-magic parents." Not the same as a Halfblood.

Thus, the reason that Harry is not a Mudblood is because his FATHER was
a pureblood wizard, not anything to do with his mother. The racists seem
to consider a Mudblood to BE a Muggle despite being a wizard or witch --
for example, in CoS, Tom Riddle tells Harry: "There are strange
likenesses between us, after all. Even you must have noticed. Both
half-bloods, orphans, raised by Muggles."

Of course, I WANT all the kids (and Sirius and Remus) to win the war and
live happily ever after and have good careers and only minor adventures
and I like a version of OBHWF in which Harry pairs off with Ron and
Hermione pairs off with Ginny, but I don't EXPECT that any of that will
happen. I live in fear that the series will end with the total
destruction of the wizarding world, internationally, in the process of
defeating the Dark Wizard(s). Sort of kind of like Tolkien ending the
Third Age at the end of LOTR.

I see a scenario in which Harry knows that the only way Voldemort can be
killed is if the killer also dies, but he accepts this burden and dies
in the fight in which he kills Voldemort (I don't like your idea that he
spends two days dying sentimentally). Ron, Hermione, and Dumbledore are
left alive and the series ends with Dumbledore delivering the eulogy at
Harry's funeral while Hermione and Ron weep. If Harry were saved at the
last minute by Wormtail accidentally or heroically stepping in to die
and kill Voldemort in his place, that would be too much of a LOTR
rip-off.

Not a superhero. No heels, no leotard, not even a leopard. I prefer the
sleep, eat, purr, sleep, eat, purr, aspects of feline life. The sig file
appears when I post from my e-mail client, but I don't bother to open
and copy and paste it when I post via the Web Page, such as the Reply
