I'm so glad someone else has thought of this!  People on this list 
have mentioned that they thought Lily and James were Aurors.  I don't 
agree with that because I think Harry would have found out what they 
did and why Voldie was after them in GoF.  Instead, we don't know what 
they did any more than Harry does.

I'd like to second the motion that James and Lily were Unspeakables.  
Of course, there are many red herrings throughout HP, but maybe this 
one was a red flag.  I have no idea what Unspeakables are (Arthur 
Weasley didn't even know), though.  Maybe they work on top secret 
magic potions, or as someone (ender?) just mentioned, they are CIA 
type people who are always working undercover.  Perhaps Unspeakables 
are the ones who train Aurors?  I'm grabbing at straws here...
