Good point, Helen.  Originally, I was agreeing with Brian that 
Dumbledore "having a word with" Flamel did not seem a likely cause of 
his giving up immortality and the Stone.  The possibility that 
Dumbledore used his powerful magic to control or persuade Flamel is 
intriguing. It also puts their supposed 'partnership' in a different 
light.

This is all speculation, of course, and if I may speculate even more 
wildly, I propose that Perenelle Flamel may have been a witch, as 
this makes the idea of collaboration between the Muggle Flamel and 
the wizard Dumbledore a little more plausible.  

The point was made earlier that JKR's Flamel does not have to match 
the historical Flamel, as it is merely an interpretation of him.  
Clearly he doesn't match exactly, and it's interesting to imagine 
that the Muggle historians are the ones who got it wrong, while JKR 
has the true Nicolas Flamel.
