It certainly seems this is a plot hole. The only rationalization I
can think of is that he has been taking Wolfsbane Potions during the
entire school year, and although he clearly needs to take it each
month during the full moon, perhaps there is some residual effect
from having had so much recently, and he transforms somewhat more
slowly until he's been off it for a few months...
