Lots of thoughts about this:
1) It is quite clear from the books (do I begin to sound like
Steve??) that the Headmaster isn't chosen by his predecessor, but by
the board of governors, whom we have seen heavily influenced (because
threatened) by Lucius in CoS. Even the MoM can't put in his veto,
which he would have liked to do in CoS, but wouldn't even try any
more after the "parting of the ways". So: If Snape can convince
Voldemort+DEs that he is a double agent *for* their side, chosing him
would be a very logical move and not too difficult to impose on the
board of Governors.
2) The deputy Headmaster is there to replace the Headmaster
temporarily, but he/she doesn't automatically become Headmaster when
he dies or retires.
3) I truly like McGonagall, she is also a very good Head of
Gryffindor, but IMHO she simply doesn't have the qualities of
leadership a headmaster of Hogwarts *must* have in the difficult
times to come.
4) Marie Antoinette, once and for all: There are lots of Snape-lovers
out there, me among them, and I have to confess that he's becoming my
favourite character in the book, because he surely is the most
complex and so very fascinating because of the mix of intelligence,
immaturity,maturity, generosity, envy, hate etc.etc.

<Deplorable.
<I don't recall Crouch rushing to his wife's aid when she fainted at

<afraid his son would escape from Azkaban or perhaps he felt guilty
<for placing his son there to begin with. Either way, Crouch Jr
<hated his father, and people generally don't hate their parents for

This calls for a forbidden "me too!!" one-liner. Anyway, I think the
reason why Barty jr. hates his father is told by himself when he
declares that his father "had loved his mother as he never loved
him". Crouch sr. is depicted as so obsessed by power, rules, law and
order that he could hardly be sympathetic. The cherry on the cake is
certainly his behaviour to his wife during the trial. I found that
awful beyond expression.

Susanna (who should really get off to work now!)
