Why did we start reading the books?

I did not read any of the books until long after PoA was released. I
remember listening to the interview with JKR on the connection-- I
half-listened really, and just mused to myself "Well, these kids are
really worked up about this. What the hell is Quidditch? Etc."

Then I went home for the holidays. I was there for a week, a much
needed break after finishing up a huge amount of work, and... well,
my mother just happened to have a copy of SS. I flipped it open
thinking "Well, time to see what the big deal is about..."

It was right around about that paragraph in which Vernon see a cat
reading a map that I knew I was not going to be able to put this
down. I didn't. I read it until I was done and didn't stop even when
my eyes were hurting.

The next day, like a junkie desperate for her next fix, I drove
through a Syracuse snow storm to borders to get the other books. I
used no restraint: I ate them up like a starved fiend, More!! More!!
I went on the net and found Fan Fiction, the Unoffficial HP Club,
etc., and then finally this little nest of wacky people.

When GoF was released, I was at Wordworth's at midnight, lined up
with everyone else. People walking by joked with us "What is this? A
rolling stones concert?" There were very few kids in that line-- most
of us were grown-ups, like me, buying the book for themselves.

I started reading the book in the taxicab going home, in spite of th
fact that it was very dark and I depended upon the scant light from
street lights to see the page. I sat up in the kitchen and feasted
until dawn.

So whaddya think? Am I incurable??
