Oh, I can soooo relate to this. I have all 4 books in
French and am determined to make a written comparison
of the bits where the books have been changed. My
French isn't what it once was (heck, I've been out of
school for too many years), and I read using the
French/English dictionary a lot! Still, I'm about
halfway through the first book. I gave up on bits
where the translation is just the misuse of a single
word, unless it's a really bad choice, and am
concentrating on the bits where whole scenes have been
altered/removed. When in doubt about translations, I
fortunately have a friend who does translation
professionally, and I consult him often. Did you know
in PS (Cdn vers., p. 7) Uncle Vernon picks out his
most 'boring' tie to wear to work, but in the French
version they use the word 'sinistre'. No two ways
about it, that only translates as sinister. Strange
choice of words on that translation.

I could go on, but... heck, if I ever get finished
I'll type it all up pretty and anyone who wants to
take a look can feel free.
