It seems to me that house elves are in a position where they can get 
away with quite a lot if they choose to.  Remember in GoF when Nearly 
Headless Nick said that a good house elf is never seen?  I imagine 
that Dobby spent as much if not more time out of the Malfoys' presence 
than in their sight.  That certainly gave him plenty of opportunity to 
use his own magic.  Besides, I don't imagine that the Malfoys focused 
too much on Dobby and what he was doing all the time.  

Maybe I'm just using this for everything, but I keep remembering that 
house elves have their own kind of magic and that their magic is quite 
powerful.  Aside from their desire to serve/enslavement by wizards, 
which keeps them where they are, I believe that house elves can 
accomplish just about anything.
