I don't think he did.  I am quite content to think that he simply
came back and picked them up afterwards.

I think this hinges on the fact that Snape isn't merely Professor of
potions but also oversees Slytherin.  He has duties toward the
students that go beyond just teaching them.  As for the scheduling
thing here, it seems just as reasonable that Sprout had to attend to
another class coming in and that everyone on the staff recognizes
that Lockhart is an incompetent git.

If I had my choice of who I'd want accompanying the students between
classes, I'd rather have Snape over Lockhart any day, and I think
that we've seen amply that Dumbledore would trust him in such a role
AND that he is more capable of handling himself than, again, Lockhart.
