If everyone believed the monster was in the castle, being outdoors
was probably seen as safer.  If Sprout could see them coming and
Snape could see them going, it was probably enough.  Also Snape is
onto kids in general: he waits at the door to make sure they all
leave and don't hang back or slip away.
