Perhaps i'm mistaken, but i SERIOUSLY doubt you're teaching your students 
magic spells that may require a strong will/self-confidence to 
cast/maintain.  And considering the possibility that Snape wants the 
Defense against the Dark Arts job, he might be toughening them so they can 
do things like resist the Imperius curse..
