I wouldn't be too hard on Jo here. The text goes:

I just assumed Percy had overheard the conversation, got nervous and decided
to jump in before Ginny spilled the beans. That "other day" bit is dodgy,
though--unless Percy intentionally shifted the event in question into a time
frame that would keep anyone from thinking it had any connection to
Penelope.
