As a member of the academic world, I must agree.  Although I am only an 
instructor at university for now, it has never ceased to amaze me that 
college professors generally are not required to take any sort of education 
courses.  It is assumed that because academics are intelligent (take that 
for what it's worth), they must be good teachers.

I think the principle behind having Hagrid teach is sound; one of the things 
my students constantly whine about is practical application of skills 
learned in class.  If the instructor does not know how things work out of 
the theoretical realm, the ride can get kind of bumpy.  At the same time, I 
am not so certain that Hagrid has the disposition to be a teacher in terms 
of relating to the students.  This is going to sound bad, but I have learned 
to act like I know what is going on when I am in front of my students, even 
if I am clueless.  He seems to let the punk students get to him too much.
