I don't think Voldemort was after Lily and James at
all.  I think his target was Harry.  Lily and James
died because they got in the way.  In PoA, Voldemort
tells Lily to "step aside".  She died because she
refused to stop shielding her son.  James, too, seems
to have died protecting Harry and Lily.   He tells
Lily to "take Harry and go...i'll hold him off"   I
think the potters knew that Harry, not themselves, was
Voldemort's target.  The fidelius charm seems too
incredibly complicated to be used as a chance
precaution.  i think that the potters knew that
voldemort was definatly after Harry for some time in
order to justify the use of such a complicated spell.
There is something special about Harry, that hasn't
been revealed yet.  Something about him will cause
voldemort's ultimate defeat, which is why voldemort
tried to dispose of harry when he was still a helpless
baby.  Perhaps this has something to do with
Trelawney's mysterious first prediction?  Perhaps she
predicted harry would be voldemort's downfall, and
that's why he wanted to kill harry?
