JKR herself (in the Red Nose Day/Comic Relief chat) said that 
Crookshanks is part kneazle. 

According to "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", 
kneazles 'have the uncanny ability to detect unsavoury or suspicious 
characters...'  (p. 24, US ed.) BTW, so do cats, for that matter--at 
least mine does!

If you remember, Crookshanks was suspicious of Scabbers from the very 
beginning (in the train compartment).  It's only later that we find 
out who Scabbers really is.  

Oh, another thing--it's Sirius, not Serious.
