I believe that JKR said in a chat somewhere (sorry I don't know which one)
that the animal a person becomes reflects his or her personality (JKR
mentioned something about how horrible it would be to become a cockroach).
This could have something to do with Sirius's name as well. It's true that
his parents could not have known that he was going to become an animagus, so
that was not the reason they gave him that name. But maybe he transforms
into a dog partly because of his name? That and the fact that he's loyal and
brave (IMO, anyway, for those of you out there who don't like Sirius).
BTW, I've been trying to figure out the significance of the stag in
mythology, but I haven't had much luck. Could someone point me in the right
direction or tell me what they came up with? I read someone's post about the
stag being an enemy of the serpent, but I would like to be able to find
something more detailed.
