According to the Greek historian Herodotus (5th cent.
B.C.E), the phoenix was a bird like an eagle, with red
and gold plumage, and which inhabited Arabia. Only
one could be alive at any time, and every 500 years it
went to Heliopolis (city of the sun), constructed an
altar, set fire to itself on it, and rose again,
beautiful and young, from the ashes of the pyre.
