I agree with Susan. There would be no point in having an out and out 
gay character. If they were in the book, it wouldn't be the main issue 
anyway. 

I don't think that the world of HP needs a gay character spelt out for 
us. We can assume, as we humans and Muggles do, that some of them are 
gay already. Just because nothings said doesn't mean that they're not 
there.
