It suddenly occurs to me that there may be a more cogent reason why
Hermione suddenly broke down at this point. All along, she's been
(hurtfully) dismissive of Ron's loss of Scabbers; now, when Ron
offers to help "save" Buckbeak, she bursts into tears and apologizes.
Perhaps one really does have to do with the other. Seeing Hagrid's
tear-stained note might very well have driven home the anguish of
losing a pet, so that Hermione now understands exactly why Ron is so
upset. Could that be why she is suddenly "really, really sorry" about
Scabbers?
Just a thought. :)
