I truly didn't think it was a prelude or a red herring, but it wasn't the
death of a beloved character I had expected. Ok, Cedric got a bit of
character development in GoF, and he was an important character,
too, because  he was the second school champion, but after all the
hype about someone dying I would have expected at least one of
the Weasleys to die (not Ron at this point, but maybe one of the
twins).

Well, the Dementor made me feel uneasy, but I didn't expect another
death in the book, and administering the Dementor's Kiss to Sirius
would have been like killing him. I was much more concerned for
him at the end of PoA, when the Dementors encircled Sirius and Harry
near the lake. When I first read it and saw the chapter named "The
Dementor's Kiss" I was sure that he would be the chosen target.
I remember that I had to finish it before going to work that day, I
couldn't stand waiting until the evening, that would have been
sheer torture, and I'm not sure that I would have got much work
done...
