  I try to download it) but perhaps it's Professor Kettleburn, the 
  teacher for CoMC that Hagrid replaced when Kettleburn wanted to 
  retire "in order to enjoy more time with his remaining limbs." I 
  always assumed it meant a non-human of some sort.

  Hmmm When I read that about Kettleburn, I assumed that it meant he was not a very adept Magical Creatures caretaker and this resulted in his getting a finger or hand nipped off. Thus, he wanted to quit while he was ahead .. or while he still had his head. hee hee
