What makes some witches/wizards become ghosts after they die and some not? 

You don't really find that out until Book VII, but I can say that the happiest people do not become ghosts. As you might guess, Moaning Myrtle!

  Good questions from the good sister.  I think JKR sort of addressed 
  them at an interview.  Someone less senile than I will probably 
  remember better, but didnt JKR say specifically that

  (1) Happy people do not become ghosts; and
  (2) James and Lily ARE not ghosts.

  Of course, I could be making that up, if so, just lock me back in my 
  cage.
