My take on that, he wanted to show that he could defeat Harry now,
even if he was untied and had his wand. Must be an ego thing, cause he
couldn't kill Harry when he was a baby. Off couse, he didn't think it
would backfire and Harry could escape. I guess no one told him that
Harry's wand was Voldemort's wand's brother. He might have had second
thoughts then and finished Harry off without untieing him first.
